So this weekend APST hosted the Summer Slaughter game and these were some of my observations:
I believe we had positive results from having a lot of admin presence on the field. I gave specific instructions at the beginning of certain games regarding safety kills, blind firing, other safety concerns, etc.
When I caught a player on the field violating one of those, I told them what they were violating, that they'd already been warned, and to go back to respawn. I didn't get any arguments and didn't see any repeat offenders. Most people were apologetic. With smaller respawn times, I don't think many people cared anyway.
Regarding hackers - I can recall less than a handful of events where I saw a person consider not taking a hit. They looked around (I assume trying to determine if anyone else saw it) and finally saw an admin - I pointed at some individuals and they called their hits. I talked to them in their respawn and one guy said, "I didn't feel it, but I thought I heard it" - which I believed since he was wearing a lot of gear.
Surprisingly there were a lot of players this weekend - ASKING QUESTIONS - which is good!! If they don't know the rules an admin nearby can clarify them. For a lot of those "+1s" that show up that don't know squat - an admin can really help them learn the proper safety/ruleset.
As admins - they were encouraged to keep an eye on sportsmanship. During one game, one team was getting their butts kicked pretty bad. So admins stepped in to remind the opposing team that spawn camping is pretty weak. The team backed off and the fire fights resumed, with little to no bitching from the losing team.
I think the group we're forming here is a good thing for upcoming games. Opponents were having a laugh with each other after games. It was really rewarding to see players actually smiling coming off the field for once . . . not just shaking their heads and bitching.
